Offering the Religion of the Future
Where will religion be 10, 20, 50 years from now? We are used to talking about the future of anything else but religion---the future of flying, the future of the Internet, the future of genetics, even the future of sex.
A religion of the future will have to be one with roots in the past, that can give humans access to the infinite through the finite. There are eternal spiritual principles that will transcend the temporary and crystallized forms. They always have.
Throughout the centuries, faith and holiness has been carried by different entities. The spirituality of Plato, which anticipates Christianity, is an example of this. In the West, after Christianity, holiness was carried by the church for a while. However, because of its ossification, the banner was taken up by philosophers. Growth, mind opening, raising of consciousness, was, starting from the 16th Century, taught by philosophers and no longer by religion.
The religion of the future will be one that emphasizes the eternal principles of personal responsibility. There will be a greater connection between inner states and outer happenings. The shrinking of the planet through the communication explosion is an out picturing of the shortening of the distance between inner states and outer level realities. This will be more and more a fact. People will be able to trace within themselves the causes outer happen, personal and global.
